This fascinating 3-session course co-led with arts professional Susan Page Tillett mixes art history, vivid paintings, photographs, and discussion to explore home as a symbol of artistic identity for Monet, O'Keeffe, Kahlo, and Rivera. Examine the settings, colors, furniture, and collections that inspired and reflected their art. Observe how each home served the needs of the artist’s life stage—Giverny, a family base; Abiquiu, a solo retreat; and Casa Azul, the background for a complicated marriage. Each meeting also includes a short, in-class writing prompt.

Elizabeth is leading this 3-session workshop on Zoom for the 92NY with arts professional Susan Page Tillett to present an overview of six outstanding artists and the words they inspired: Henri Matisse and Sam Francis; Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams; Romare Bearden and Faith Ringgold. The themes are the language of color; landscapes in black and white and color; and pieced stories: collage.

Elizabeth will lead this introduction to Fisher's life and legacy with a virtual tour of the house Fisher designed on the magnificent Bouverie Preserve in Glen Ellen, CA. The iconic food writer lived there for her last 20 years, producing 13 admired books. Her younger daughter, Kennedy Golden, will join us to discuss Fisher's beloved nooks and crannies for writing, rest, socializing, and appreciating the Sonoma landscape. We’ll use short, guided exercises, photos, discussion and sharing to reflect on our lives during sheltering-in-place and come away with new ideas for transforming our homes and creative practices.

We’ll draw on the images and words of outstanding artists who have captured Western landscapes, including O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams. In the afternoons, we'll have a chance to hike and horseback ride, visit O'Keeffe's iconic home, and roam and relax among cottonwoods and creeks in this vivid setting of vast vistas, table-topped mesas, and red clay mountains. Simple, pleasant lodgings and all meals will be provided. Cost varies according to accommodations from $545-1290.

2008 readings
Several Wednesday and Friday Writers read from new books during the fall of 2008:
• On Sept. 5th, Melanie Johnston read from her memoir, What My Father Saw: A Daughter’s Journey Through Her Father’s Memories As One of the Liberators of Buchenwald Concentration Camp at Mrs. Dalloway’s, 5433 College Avenue, Berkeley.
• On Sept. 6th, Laura Shumaker introduced her new memoir, A Regular Guy; Growing Up With Autism at Orinda Books, 276 Village Square, Orinda.
• On Sept. 11th, several contributors to Risa Nye’s anthology, Writin’ on Empty: Parents Reveal the Upside, Downside and Everything in Between When Children Leave the Nest, including Elizabeth Fishel, read at Mrs. Dalloway’s.
